This weekend is going to be rough. On Monday of this week, I was working out with my trainer at the gym. I was doing quick steps off a medium box and I was near the end of my set. I came down wrong on my left ankle and sprained it. Badly. I actually thought I tore something because both my trainer and I heard a loud pop when I rolled it. It immediately started swelling and I immediately got tears in my eyes. This is not how I want to go into a big race week.
I’ve finally been starting to get some miles on my legs. Don’t get me wrong, I’m nowhere near in shape, but I’ve been able to run a little with no pain. Now, I’m right back on the injury list and I have 22 miles of races this weekend. The worst part is that there is no way I can defer. Deferrals are sold out already so I have two choices; start the races and try to do as much as I can without injuring myself further or skip the races and lose the registration fees and a night of hotel that is too late to cancel. I don’t want to make the injury worse and I’m not sure if I tore something, but I have an appointment with my doc on Wednesday anyhow so I wait to get an assessment from him.
I’m so fortunate to have a great chiropractor. He deals with a lot of sports related injuries and has been able to get me through many of my injuries without having to go to specialists. When I see him on Wednesday, I explain what happened and he starts checking out my ankle. After a few quick movement assessments, he determines that I haven’t torn anything. This is a huge relief. I have sprained it very badly though. So, he makes several recommendations to get me through the weekend. I’m still not happy but I can at least follow his recommendations and hopefully get through the races.
I get all my gear packed on Wednesday night. I’ll be dropping my dogs off at the kennel first thing on Thursday morning and then heading up to the Health and Fitness Expo to pick up my packet. Also, one of the girls in my group is getting married this weekend so we are having a sort of bachelorette dinner for her.
I’m up and dressed pretty quickly this morning. I get my car loaded and get the pups out the door. I drop them off at the kennel and then meet Cheertator at McDonald’s. We are running the 5k together tomorrow so we both have to get our packets (since each runner has to pick up their own packets now).
We leave my car at Target and then ride the rest of the way together. Cheertator has to go back to work so we’ll stop back by Target once we finish at the expo so I can get my car and pick up a few items for the weekend (like breakfasts and water).
The Wide World of Sports complex is crowded. We are parked way out in the grass lot and have to take a bus up to the main entrance. I’m moving all sorts of slow thanks to my ankle. I’ve taken some meds to help take the edge off the pain but I’m already prepared to be mostly miserable this weekend.
We have to wait in line for several minutes before we’re allowed to enter the HP Field House. This is where we get our bibs and where we pick up commemorative items (i.e. the pins I pre-order). Once we’re allowed in, we head down the stairs to the main floor and stand in lines to get bibs. We both have to get 5k bibs and then I have to get my Dark Side Challenge bib. Additionally, I have to get my photo taken with my Challenge bib.
We run into our friends, Beth and Shane, while we we’re walking to get shirts. Beth and Shane are the couple getting married this weekend. Everyone in our group is so excited and happy for them! We chat with them for a few minutes and then head off to get shirts and such.
Once we get our shirts, we head upstairs to get commemorative items. I manage to catch my foot; the one with the sprained ankle; on one of the steps and let out a string of swear words. As if my ankle wasn’t enough! It’s just one strike after another right now!
The line for commemorative items moved quickly. I got my pins and then walked through the official merchandise area. I didn’t see anything that I had to have so we headed over to the Josten’s Center for the Expo.
It was very crowded in the Josten’s Center. We had to walk all the way around the soccer fields to get to the Expo. By the time we got up the stairs and were allowed in the Expo, I was tired and my ankle was throbbing. I really don’t know how I’m going to make it through these races.
I got a beer at one of the concession stands. It was a coffee beer and it was really good! I don’t like coffee so I was surprised I liked it. They did let me have a little sample before I bought it. I drank my beer while we walked. Per my doc, I need to wear compression socks as much as possible to help with the swelling in my ankle. I don’t need to wrap it or tape it because it doesn’t need stability; I just need the compression for swelling. I don’t want to wear full compression socks and compression sleeves won’t work since they stop at my ankle. CEP compression makes crew length compression socks. So, I buy a couple of pairs of these.
We finally finish our shopping and head out. Cheertator has to get to work and I have a couple of errands to run and I need to check in at the hotel. So, we head back to Target so I can get my car.
After running my errands, I checked in at Port Orleans Riverside. The front desk cast member was super nice and got my room changed for me. I did have an upstairs room. With my ankle being in bad shape, I really don’t want to have to climb stairs all weekend too. So, he got me changed to a downstairs room. It is quite possibly the furthest building away from the main lobby, but it is close to the bus stop and I’m not far from where I have to park. I won’t have to walk too far to get to the bus and back to my room and I can always drive around to the main lobby. This works for me.
Once I’m settled in the room, I don’t have much time before I have to change clothes to head to the Polynesian. We have dinner reservations for Beth’s party. I can’t wait to see everyone. And, since we have an earlier dinner, we can all get back to our rooms and get some sleep. I’m running the 5k in the morning and Beth is getting married! The girls are going to try to spy on the wedding paparazzi style!
Until tomorrow…gotta run!
