WHPD Torch Run 5k

March 12, 2016

I ran the WHPD Torch Run in 2014 during my “running adventure” that took me to 59 races during the year. I decided to run this year’s event because it’s close to St. Patrick’s Day and I have a cute St. Patrick’s Day outfit that I want to wear.

I’m ready for St. Patrick’s Day. I just need a beer stein!

I registered and opted to get the t-shirt rather than the tech shirt. I won’t wear either of them but it wasn’t an option not to get a shirt. So, I’ll just donate this one next time I clean out my closet!

Packet pick-up for this race is a breeze. I leave work and head over to the Winter Haven Police Department. I am in and out in less than a minute with my packet. I have my bib, goody bag and race shirt.

The race is at 8 AM so I don’t have to get moving too early. I have my gear out and get dressed quickly. After I take the pups outside for a quick walk, I am out the door so I can grab some breakfast.

Once I arrive at the race site, I have to go inside to get my timing tag. These tags go on your shoe. I attach my tag and then head outside to wait for the start of the race. While I’m waiting, I meet Neil. I see Neil all the time at the gym but I never actually met him. We chatted for awhile and then head towards the start. Neil is a chef and runs his own bistro. I’ve heard good things about it but I’ve never eaten there. I’ll have to give it a try some time.

The race finally starts. I know I’m going to be slow because I still haven’t been running much. I’m just starting to ease back into it since I feel like some of my nagging muscle issues have subsided. I am going to take it easy on this run; I’m only here because I wanted to wear my fun outfit and support a good cause.

I keep running my intervals; 30 second run/30 second walk. I walked an extra interval a couple of times but stayed with it for the most part. According to my Garmin, I finished in 40:09. When I finally looked up my official results, my time was 40:09! I’ve never had my Garmin and my official race time be exactly the same like that!

I got a ton of compliments on my race outfit. My Irish Lass green plaid Sparkle Skirt and my InkNBurn Lucky Charm 2 tech shirt were big hits! I even had shamrock Pro Compression calf sleeves! I was fully decked out for St. Patrick’s Day.

A pic snapped as I was coming into the finish line. I look kinda serious!

After the race, I grabbed some water and a snack and waited around for the giveaways. Sadly, I didn’t win anything. Now I get to do house chores! Yahoo! (sarcasm font)

Until next time…gotta run!
