FitNiche is my local running store. I buy almost all of my running shoes and sports bras here. The people are very knowledgeable and helpful and I love supporting local businesses. They’ve recently moved from their longtime home to a larger store in the same shopping complex. The new store is roomier and has even more great items for me to buy!
FitNiche hosts their own 5k every year. It is in the parking lot and the area around the shopping complex where the store is located. I did the Faster with FitNiche 5k a few years ago with my friend as his first 5k. But, this is the first one since they’ve moved to their new store so the course is slightly different.
I arrive early on the morning of the race so I can get my packet. There are no race shirts this year. Instead, the race has opted for sling style backpacks. These were less expensive than shirts which is allowing them to donate more money to the family that will be benefiting from today’s race; Asher Camp, a very young boy with SMA.
Runners line up in front of the store at the start line. There are a lot more people out than I expected. It is nice to see that so many people have come to support this race and help the family in need.
The race begins and for the first five minutes, my legs feel like lead. I warmed up and stretched some (dynamic stretching) but my legs may as well be anchors today. I am running 1/1 intervals and my run segments feel like they are slower than my walk segments; they aren’t but they certainly feel slow.
I get through the first mile and my legs still haven’t loosened up like they normally would have by now. I did leg work early in the week at they gym so I’m not really sure why my legs are feeling so heavy. I stick to my intervals but am contemplating changing them to 30 second/30 second intervals.
I end up sticking to the 1/1 intervals and finished in 36:25. It is really hot so I make my way to the water table. I fill a cup and drink some cold water and immediately refill it. I grab a few snacks as well and then find a place to sit and stretch a little. I think I will do some yoga later today to try to loosen up my leg muscles.
After the conclusion of the race, the Brass Tap (restaurant and bar) has graciously opened their doors for some post race celebrations. There is nothing like seeing a hundred or so runners in a bar at 8 AM on a Saturday morning. The bar has some beer and food specials as well.
While everyone is enjoying some refreshments, FitNiche gives out the awards for the races and then does some giveaways. They throw some t-shirts into the crowd and I managed to catch one of these. I didn’t win any other prizes but it was a lot of fun watching people jump and grab for some of the items that were thrown into the crowd. One person even won new shoes for a year; this opportunity is one of the reasons I like to run this race!
I assumed the t-shirt I won would be a large or extra large. When I got home, I actually looked at the shirt and it was a small. I didn’t figure the shirt would fit but I tried it on anyhow. Holy cow; it fit! It is tight, especially through the chest, but it fit! Color me excited!
Off to cut the yard. Gotta run!
