Aching Quad Race #4

September 13, 2014

The final race of the Aching Quad is another 5k around Lake Hollingsworth. I arrive and park across the street. I have plenty of time so I just relax in my car for a bit. It’s a warm evening but there is a little bit of a breeze and I am under some trees so it isn’t too bad.

I’m standing outside my car with the door open and I’m trying to pin my bib on when I hear the horn sound to start the race. I look at my watch and it is just 7:00. I thought the race started at 7:30! Holy pants!

Races 1 and 4 are 5k loops around Lake Hollingsworth.

I shut my car quickly and stick my keys in my SPI pouch. I’ve got safety pins in my hand and one corner of my bib is pinned. I started my Garmin as I crossed the street. I jog as I try to pin my bib on. I have started about two minutes behind the rest of the pack.

Once I finally get my bib pinned, I take off. I run through a few of my intervals and catch up to a group of walkers. I pass them and keep running. I make it to the first mile and decide to switch back to my intervals. I am kicking myself and wondering how I messed up the time. I must’ve looked at it 20 times.

At the mile two marker, I am told the time is around 27 minutes. I think this isn’t too bad considering I started late and I walked/jogged just trying to pin my bib on my shirt. I definitely made up a little bit of time.

I finished the race in 38:04. All things considered, I am about as happy as I can be. It was slower than my time for the race yesterday evening but I managed to make up those couple minutes I lost by starting late. On a more positive note, I noticed that the bugs weren’t as bad either. When I got to the car, I didn’t feel the need to blow my nose to get the bugs out like yesterday.

The Aching Quad was fun. I will definitely consider doing it again next year if it fits into my race schedule. My schedule for next year is not going to be nearly as aggressive since I want to start checking some states off my list and I want to start cross training for a triathlon. Of the nearby races that I will likely consider, this will definitely be on the list.

It has been a busy day and I am tired now. I’m glad I got some stuff done around the house between races today. All I have looming is laundry now and that isn’t too bad. I’m ready to relax and hit the pillow.

Aching Quad expenses:

Registration: ~$44
Gas: ~$25
Food: ~$20
Total: ~$89

Gotta run.
