Disneyland 5k

August 29, 2014

Yesterday, after I finished getting my packets and shopping at the expo, I walked to the grocery store about a mile down the street from the hotel. I was able to get some water, cereal, milk, and a few other items so I wouldn’t have to rely solely on the hotel breakfast. This is also helpful to me since I am not a morning person. I can eat breakfast while I’m getting dressed and not feel rushed.

After I finish getting dressed and eat my breakfast, I walk over to the race staging area. The first thing that I notice is that signage is much better for this race than it was when I was here for Tinker Bell. I make it to the family reunion area, but I don’t have a bag to check so I head over to my corral.

The theme for this particular race is Lilo and Stitch so Carissa and Rudy, the race announcers, are decked out in Hawaiian gear. Lilo, Stitch, and even Elvis make appearances. In fact, Elvis sings the National Anthem.

Once Elvis finishes, the first corral is off. I am in corral B. We are sent on our run about three minutes or so after corral A. It’s a nice morning; it’s not hot but I know that I’ll be sweaty as soon as I start running. (Course map)

The awesome part of the 5k’s at Disneyland is that they are nearly entirely in the two parks. We have about a quarter of a mile run from our corral to Paradise Pier and then we turn into the backlot of Disney’s California Adventure. From there, it’s almost all parks.

I made a quick stop for this pic with Tow Mater. He's one of my favorite Cars characters.

I stop for several selfies since I stopped for zero pictures at Tinker Bell. The 5k is untimed; I am timing myself on my Garmin; so I am not overly concerned with my time. I just want to finish but I want to have fun also. I stop for pictures in both parks and I really take the time to look at everything. I really missed a lot of scenery during Tink. It was not fun being so sick.

The last stretch of the 5k is through Downtown Disney. Then we turn in front of the Disneyland Hotel and run the last stretch to the finish line. I finished in 39:05 according to Garmin. I didn’t expect to finish quite so quickly considering I stopped for quite a few pictures. I guess since I didn’t really wait in any lines, I just snapped some selfies, I didn’t really lose a lot of time.

I collect my medal and some refreshments. The food box has the cheese spread and tortilla chips so I eat those. But, I know it is breakfast hours at the hotel so I opt to eat some hot breakfast rather than the rest of the stuff in the box.

All finished with the Disneyland 5k.

I really enjoyed the run today. I didn’t realize how cool Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure parks really are. I won’t be visiting the parks beyond the races on this trip. But, I am definitely looking forward to coming back in November for Avengers and enjoying some park time then.

Gotta run.

Loved your blog and very helpful because November’s Avengers Race will be my first 5K ever. Maybe I will see you there and good luck.

Thanks so much! I hope you have a blast at the Avengers 5k. It was a great race and all of the Disney races are so well supported. Sadly, I won’t be at Avengers this year. Good luck!
