The Watermelon Series is a series of four 5k races put on by the Lakeland Runner’s Club. There is a really nice running path around one of the local lakes and this race takes place there. The path around the lake is just shy of three miles so it’s really a nice run.
I registered for the entire series ahead of time so that I would be eligible for the race shirt. I won’t get my t-shirt until the last race but I have to pick up a new bib at each race. I arrive a few minutes early so that I can park and get my bib. Parking isn’t the best around the lake when there is a race so I park down one of the side streets.
The race starts in the street just in front of the parking lot. We stay in the street for about a quarter of a mile and then we move up to the sidewalk around the lake. This short distance is enough to allow the pack to thin out some before we move to the sidewalk.
It’s a pretty flat run all the way around the lake. And, since it’s early, it’s relatively pleasant. It’s warm and humid but it isn’t unbearable since the sun isn’t full force yet.
There is one water stop about halfway through the race and it is very well supported. There are plenty of folks handing water to the runners and cheering as we go by.
I’ve run this path many times so I’m familiar with it. I enjoy running it and wish I lived a bit closer to it. I would certainly run it more often as it’s got some nice shady areas and the houses and views around the lake are really quite pretty. There area also plenty of ducks and, this early, there are even some bunnies in a grassy patch near the lake. I took some pictures of the bunnies (I’m kind of silly like that).
I finished the first Watermelon race in 35:40. I’m pretty happy with this and I’m hoping to improve a little each race. Since the race course is the same for all four races, there won’t be any change except the weather!
